Cannabis suppresses the growth and spread of cancer cells
Cannabis and cancer
The diagnosis of cancer will be given, by a doctor in the Czech Republic, to an average of 80,000 patients per year, with approximately 30,000 people dying from the disease annually. Cancer is a disease that is characterised by uncontrolled cell proliferation, mostly with the formation of tumours. It is now considered a disease of civilisation, and its causes are often linked to the consequences of living in large cities in industrialised countries.
Prescription cannabis alleviates the effects of chemotherapy
Conventional cancer treatment (especially chemotherapy) has many side effects and, as such, scientists are looking for alternatives among natural products. Cannabis sativa contains a number of substances, especially cannabinoids, that are compatible with the endocannabinoid system in our body. Thus, research into various types of cancers and the potential role of cannabinoids in curative cancer treatment is seeing more attention. In this article we will focus on the results of breast cancer research.
It has already been proven that the use of cannabis sativa reduces the manifestations of the disease as well as the side effects of conventional treatment such as anorexia or pain. As such, medical cannabis is also prescribed in the Czech Republic as palliative (supportive) treatment. British researchers have recently formulated that, in addition to the already well-known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, CBD (cannabidiol, non-synergistic cannabinoid contained in cannabis) also has anti-proliferative properties (proliferation - growth and spread of cancer cells). It is therefore starting to become apparent that CBD could be one way of treating some cancers.
How to safely use CBD?

CBD: Hope for Breast Cancer
In 2006, Italian scientists investigated the effect of CBD and other non-psychoactive cannabinoids on tumour cell growth in breast cancer. The result? Suppression of tumour growth and metastasis. However, the research was not sufficiently extensive and as such the researchers called for further investigation. Major results came in 2014 from California. Researchers published a study that examined the development and spread of nerve cells in breast cancer, based on the application of CBD and THC. In conclusion, these cannabinoids have the potential to become a new drug for treating cases of breast cancer.
A year later, a much clearer result come from research carried out at Ohio State University. Researchers were able to show that CBD suppresses the growth and spread of cancer cells in cases of breast cancer, including metastases. The research looked particularly at the highly aggressive type of TNBC (Triple-Negative Breast Cancer). The conclusion of the research is the defence of the use of CBD in the treatment of cancer and the strong recommendation of its application in cases of this disease and other types of breast cancer at an advanced stage, especially in patients for which more conventional treatments do not help.
It is becoming increasingly apparent that the cannabinoids contained in cannabis, particularly non-psychoactive CBD, have very positive effects. Modern science can not afford to overlook the positive attributes of this naturally occurring medicine.
